Definition
The acknowledgment that an agent exists, participates, contributes, or belongs within a system.
Inclusionist Perspective
Recognition transforms witnessing into social legitimacy.
Core Principle
Participation becomes meaningful when it is recognized.
Inclusionist Perspective
Many forms of exclusion emerge not from hostility but from failures of recognition.
Unrecognized participation often produces unrecognized value.
Recognition and Judgment
Recognition requires taking a participant's experience and interpretation seriously. It does not require treating that interpretation as a complete factual account or as exclusive authority over another participant's intention.
Institutions preserve both recognition and disciplined judgment when they distinguish experience, evidence, interpretation, consequence, legitimacy, and response. See Contextual Legitimacy and Relational Interpretation.
