Belonging
Belonging
Definition
The condition that emerges when an agent's existence, participation, agency, and value are recognized within a system.
Inclusionist Perspective
Belonging is not merely acceptance.
Belonging is the experience of being recognized as a legitimate participant within a community, system, or civilization.
Core Principle
Belonging emerges from successful recognition.
It cannot be imposed.
It cannot be manufactured through rhetoric alone.
Inclusionist Perspective
Individuals are at their best when they identify with a community.
Communities are at their best when they identify all of their individuals.
Every newly recognized individual alters the community performing the recognition.
Nested Belonging
Individuals simultaneously participate in multiple overlapping communities.
Examples include:
family
neighborhood
profession
culture
nation
civilization
digital communities
Belonging is therefore layered rather than singular.
