Definition
The process through which agents become distinct from one another through identity, behavior, capability, knowledge, perspective, or participation.
Inclusionist Perspective
Differentiation is one of the primary sources of value emergence.
Without differentiation there can be interaction.
Without interaction there can be no novel value.
Core Principle
Communities grow through the differentiation of their participants.
Inclusionist Perspective
Belonging and differentiation are not opposites.
Belonging evolves through the continual incorporation of differentiated agents.
Differentiated agents can interpret the same interaction through different histories, vulnerabilities, relationships, and positions. These perspectives can reveal distinct consequences without becoming equally complete accounts. See Contextual Legitimacy and Relational Interpretation.
